Navigating The Graduation Cliff: Why Support For Young Adults With Autism In Bucks County Is A Shared Mission

What happens to a barn if a hundred people let go of the ropes at once?
The Amish are famous for their barn-raisings because they turn the impossible into a science. They don’t rely on five or ten specialists; they rely on hundreds of neighbors. When everyone holds their rope, the weight is shared, the structure rises, and the community grows. But the moment the workforce disappears, the science of the pulleys and the strength of the wood no longer matter. The structure fails.
For 20 years, Potential has been building the “gear” – the evidence-based programs, the clinical blueprints, and the world-class facilities. But as we reach graduation season for our young adults in Pennsylvania, we have to be honest about a systemic crisis: We’ve spent two decades building the gear, but right now, there aren’t enough hands to hold the ropes.
The Cliff Is Real (And We Are Feeling It)
If you are a parent of a child or young adult with autism in Pennsylvania, you already know about “The Cliff.” It’s that daunting transition at age 22 when the structured support of the school system ends.
“I imagine the graduation cliff like a rock climber. With the right tools and programs, it can be navigated. But right now, the supports aren’t reliably working because of staffing shortages. In that analogy, the equipment fails, and the climber falls. We are in the painful position of not being able to guarantee full-time staffing to students we’ve supported for 15 years. That reality is devastating.”
– Kristine Quinby, President & CEO, Potential
Ideally, organizations like Potential act as the safety gear for that rock climber. But across the country, and right here in our community, that equipment is failing. Not because the therapy isn’t effective, but because of a massive, nationwide staffing shortage.
At Potential, we find ourselves in a position that is truly devastating…Despite having supported some students for over 15 years, the lack of available staff means we sometimes cannot offer the adult programming those families have counted on. We saw this coming, we prepared the families, and yet, the systemic lack of manpower means the “climber” is still at risk of falling.
A Legacy Interrupted: How We Got Here
This battle didn’t start yesterday. In 2003, our founder, Kristine Quinby, served on the Pennsylvania Autism Task Force. We fought for the creation of the Adult Autism Waiver to ensure that adults could live meaningful, social, and productive lives.
For years, it worked.
But since 2020, a “perfect storm” of inflation and stagnant state-funded rates has led to a national workforce crisis. While Potential was voted a Top Workplace by the Philadelphia Inquirer, the reality is that the state’s support for adult services hasn’t kept pace with the cost of living. This isn’t just an “autism problem” – it’s a societal one.
Why Donating To Potential Is A “Bet On People”
When we ask for your support, it isn’t just to keep the lights on or buy new workbooks. We need a community of donors to help us recruit and retain the people who hold the ropes.
- Competitive Wages: To attract the best staff in a competitive market, we must offer wages that reflect the expertise and heart our staff bring to work every day.
- Expert Support Systems: We invest heavily in our “Best Workplace” pillar because we know that supported staff provide better care. Your donations fund the training and benefits that help keep expert staff in the field.
- Sharing the Weight: Just like an Amish barn-raising, the weight of the “Graduation Cliff” is too heavy for one organization to hold. We need a “hundred neighbors” to grab a rope so that no student is left behind.
How To Help Hold The Line
We are the leaders in this systemic battle, but no leader can win a war of attrition alone. To stabilize the cliff, we need a community that is willing to pull in the same direction. Here is how you can grab a rope today:
1. Families: Become The Voice Of The 1%
We share and understand your fears because we see them in the eyes of our students every day. But your voice carries a weight that ours alone cannot. Advocacy is our collective rope.
Reach out to local and state representatives to demand that waiver rates reflect the 2026 reality of the workforce. Tell them that “funding” isn’t just a number on a spreadsheet – it is the difference between a young adult having a life of purpose or falling into a void of isolation. Remind them that without competitive wages, the “equipment” of the state’s own waivers will continue to fail.

2. Supporters: Invest In Human Potential
Your gift to the Potential Circle is a direct investment in the humans who do this work. In a market where high-quality staff are being pulled away to less demanding sectors, your support allows us to say “yes” to the people who say “yes” to our students.
Join the Circle to help us bridge the gap between stagnant state funding and the competitive wages our experts deserve. Pick up a rope today, and continue our graduating students’ lifelines.
3. Community: Help Us Find The Helpers
If you know someone looking for a career with purpose, send them to Potential. We are looking for the next generation of “ropes-holders” – individuals who are ready to toe the line and provide excellent, evidence-based care.
We have the science. We have the passion. We have the world-class gear. Now, we simply need more people. By helping us recruit, you are helping us expand our reach and shorten the waitlists that keep families trapped at the edge of the cliff.
A Future Without Cliffs
20 years ago, we fought for the right to exist. 10 years ago, we fought for the right to excel. Today, we are fighting for the right to endure.
The “Graduation Cliff” is a systemic failure, but it is not an inevitability. If enough people grab a rope, the weight becomes light. If enough neighbors show up to the barn-raising, the structure rises. Let’s make sure that in another 20 years, we aren’t talking about a cliff at all – we’re talking about a bridge that we built together.
