A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is the first step towards creating an effective behavior plan. The assessment consists of document review, interviews, questionnaires, and observation. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) will conduct the assessment in collaboration with other professionals and caregivers. When the assessment is complete, an individualized behavior plan will be created based upon the results. Drafts will be reviewed with the team in order to create a plan that is not only effective, but that also fits within the family and school dynamic.
When an FBA has not lead to behavior change in the past or if there is still a question about the function of a behavior, a Functional Analysis may be recommended. This process is a manipulation of antecedents and consequences in a safe environment to determine the function of a behavior. It is more reliable than an FBA and may be completed in a shorter time period. This assessment is done in the Potential Inc. clinic with trained staff and overseen by the BCBA.
